About the project
APX Civil was engaged to complete landscape and accessibility improvements within the green space surrounding Carpark 4 at the University of Wollongong.
The project involved excavating and reshaping sections of the existing landscaped area to create a safer and more functional pedestrian connection through the carpark precinct.
The completed works provide improved access between the upper carpark and surrounding pathways while introducing practical sandstone seating and landscaped elements for students, staff and visitors.
Excavation & Site Preparation
The APX Civil team carried out detailed excavation and site preparation throughout the existing green space, carefully working within the established landscaped and forested environment.
The works created the required levels and formations for the new pedestrian pathway, sandstone structures and connecting stairs while maintaining integration with the surrounding landscape.
Decomposed Granite Pathway
A new decomposed granite pathway was constructed from the upper section of Carpark 4 through the existing green space.
The pathway provides a defined and accessible pedestrian route through the area, improving connectivity between the carpark and the pathway running behind the existing parking spaces.
Sandstone Seating & Stairs
Large sandstone blocks were incorporated throughout the project to create natural seating areas alongside the new pathway.
Sandstone stairs were also constructed to transition between the different site levels, connecting the upper landscaped area with the lower pedestrian pathway while complementing the natural character of the surrounding environment.
Improved Accessibility & Usability
The completed development has significantly improved how students, staff and visitors move through and use the Carpark 4 precinct.
The new pathway, seating areas and sandstone stairs provide safer pedestrian movement through the carpark and create practical areas for people waiting, loading or unloading vehicles, while making greater use of the existing green space.
