About the project
APX Civil was engaged to deliver the construction of a new car park at the Moss Vale Road Exhibition Centre in Cambewarra, NSW.
The works involved full site preparation, survey set-out, service locating, sediment controls, earthworks, subgrade preparation, stormwater drainage, service conduits, pavement construction, two coat seal surfacing, line marking, signage, wheel stops, bollard installation and landscaping.
The project transformed an undeveloped area into a functional car park designed to improve site access, support visitor movement and provide a practical parking solution for the exhibition centre.
Site Establishment and Early Works
The project began with a structured establishment phase to prepare the site for civil construction and ensure works could proceed safely and efficiently. APX Civil coordinated machinery floats, temporary site amenities, waste management, traffic control requirements, council-related approvals and temporary fencing across the work area.
Survey set-out was completed from supplied survey control and CAD files, allowing the team to establish the car park footprint, service locations and proposed construction extents before physical works commenced. Existing services were located through cable scanning, reducing risk during excavation and helping guide the planning of new service trenches.
Sediment controls were also installed early in the program, including sediment traps to existing inlet pits and sediment fencing to manage runoff throughout construction. A temporary access road was built using recycled aggregate, allowing plant, trucks and crews to move through the site while protecting surrounding areas and maintaining efficient site access.
This early preparation provided the foundation for a controlled and well-sequenced construction process, with access, environmental controls, services and survey information all established before bulk works began.
Earthworks, Subgrade Preparation and Testing
Once the site was established, APX Civil commenced the earthworks package for the new car park, garden areas and amenities zones. This included stripping topsoil and excavating areas to the required depth, with approximately 200 cubic metres of spoil relocated and tipped at the Newpro stockpile site within the development area.
The car park subgrade was then trimmed, proof rolled and compacted across approximately 920 square metres of pavement area. Plant used throughout this stage included GPS-equipped excavation machinery, compactors, rollers and water cart support to assist with trimming, moisture conditioning and compaction.
Geotechnical testing formed an important part of the process, with proof roll inspection and compaction testing carried out to confirm the suitability of the subgrade before pavement construction progressed. This testing helped provide confidence that the prepared base was suitable for the next stages of roadbase import, placement and compaction.
By managing excavation, spoil relocation, subgrade trimming and testing in a controlled sequence, APX Civil was able to prepare a stable working platform for the pavement and finishing works that followed.
Services, Drainage and Future Amenities Connections
The project included a coordinated service installation package to support the car park area and future amenities connections. APX Civil installed a 100mm PVC stormwater drainage line connected to the existing kerb, with the line turned up at the proposed amenities location.
The works also included the installation of two 50mm power conduits, capped outside the boundary and turned up at the amenities area, complete with draw wire for future service installation. These works were completed alongside trenching, bedding, backfilling and compaction using excavation equipment and manual compaction support.
Water and sewer services were also incorporated into the scope. This included approximately 30 metres of 100mm sewer service connected to the existing 150mm PVC stub, as well as approximately 38 metres of 20mm water service connected to the existing copper water service and turned up at the proposed amenities location.
This stage required careful coordination between civil works and service requirements to ensure all underground infrastructure was installed accurately and integrated with the broader site layout before pavement construction commenced.
Car Park Pavement, Surfacing and Finishing Works
The car park construction package involved the formation of the pavement area, perimeter edging, driveway interface works and final car park finishes. APX Civil installed timber edge strips to the perimeter of the car park and completed minor widening works to the western entry driveway, including kerb reinstatement following the stormwater kerb connection.
To strengthen the pavement profile, geogrid and fabric were installed beneath the roadbase across the car park area. A 200mm roadbase layer was then imported, placed, trimmed and compacted over approximately 920 square metres, with compaction testing carried out during the placement process.
The surface was finished with a 14/7 two coat seal, supported by sweeping and water cart works as required. The scope also allowed for line marking, regulatory signage, two sign posts with three signs in total, 30 rubber wheel stops and one bollard to complete the car park layout and improve vehicle organisation across the finished area.
Together, these works converted the prepared site into a functional car park ready for daily use, with clear parking spaces, controlled vehicle movement and a durable pavement surface suited to the needs of the exhibition centre.
